Homemade Green Bean Casserole

A classic homemade green bean casserole featuring fresh green beans and a creamy mushroom sauce topped with crispy fried onions, perfect for holiday dinners or weeknight meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed and cut in half
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Blanch the green beans in boiling water for 3-4 minutes until tender-crisp. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add mushrooms, onion, and garlic; sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and cook, stirring constantly, for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  5. Gradually whisk in the broth and heavy cream, cooking until the sauce thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
  6. Stir in soy sauce, salt, and pepper.
  7. Combine the blanched green beans with the mushroom sauce and mix well.
  8. Transfer the mixture to a baking dish and spread evenly.
  9. Bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes until bubbly.
  10. Remove from oven, sprinkle crispy fried onions evenly on top, and bake an additional 5 minutes until onions are golden brown.
  11. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

For extra flavor, try adding a sprinkle of shredded cheddar cheese on top before adding the fried onions.
