French Toast Bake recipe

This French Toast Bake is a comforting and easy-to-make breakfast casserole featuring custardy, cinnamon-spiced bread baked to golden perfection, perfect for family mornings or brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of day-old bread (challah or brioche), cut into cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter or non-stick spray (to grease the baking dish)
  • Optional: powdered sugar and maple syrup for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Place the cubed bread evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until fully combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down gently to soak all pieces.
  5. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight to allow the bread to soak up the custard.
  6. Remove from the refrigerator and bake covered for 25 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the French Toast Bake cool for 5 minutes before serving. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup.

Notes

For added texture, sprinkle chopped nuts or a streusel topping before baking. Serve with fresh berries for a bright contrast.
