French Onion Chicken Bake

A savory French Onion Chicken Bake that combines tender chicken breasts with caramelized onions, rich Swiss cheese, and a crispy breadcrumb topping for a comforting and flavorful meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 3 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or ½ teaspoon dried thyme)
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1½ cups shredded Swiss cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions with a pinch of salt and cook, stirring frequently, until onions are deeply caramelized, about 25–30 minutes.
  3. Add minced garlic and thyme to the onions, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer until most of the liquid evaporates, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
  5. Season chicken breasts with salt and pepper and place them in the prepared baking dish.
  6. Top each chicken breast with the caramelized onion mixture, then sprinkle shredded Swiss cheese evenly over the top.
  7. In a small bowl, mix panko breadcrumbs with grated Parmesan cheese. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the cheese layer.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through (internal temperature 165°F/74°C) and the topping is golden and crispy.
  9. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm.

Notes

For extra flavor, serve with a side of garlic mashed potatoes or a light green salad. You can also swap Swiss cheese for Gruyère for a richer taste.
