Chinese Pepper Steak is a savory stir-fry featuring tender strips of beef with crisp bell peppers in a flavorful soy-based sauce, perfect for a quick and satisfying dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp ginger, minced
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 green onions, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of beef broth until smooth. Add the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, black pepper, and remaining beef broth; stir to combine.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the sliced beef and stir-fry until browned but not fully cooked, about 2-3 minutes. Remove beef and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add garlic, ginger, and onions; stir-fry for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the sliced red and green bell peppers and cook for 3-4 minutes until crisp-tender.
  5. Return the beef to the skillet and pour the sauce mixture over the ingredients. Stir well and cook for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens and beef is cooked through.
  6. Drizzle sesame oil over the stir-fry, toss to combine, and remove from heat.
  7. Garnish with chopped green onions if desired and serve hot with steamed rice.

Notes

For extra flavor, marinate the beef in a bit of soy sauce and black pepper for 15 minutes before cooking. Serve with steamed jasmine rice or fried rice for a complete meal.
